Romance Scams

A relationship develops over weeks or months through a dating app or social media, often with someone who says they live overseas or work somewhere that makes meeting in person difficult. Eventually, a crisis arises — medical bills, a stuck shipment, travel costs — and they ask for money.

Warning signs

What to watch for

Professes strong feelings quickly, before ever meeting in person
Always has a reason they can't video call or meet face-to-face
A sudden emergency that requires money urgently
Asks for payment via gift cards, wire transfer, or cryptocurrency

Stay safe

How to verify

Do a reverse image search on their profile photo — many scammers reuse stolen photos
Never send money to someone you haven't met in person, no matter how long you've been talking

Already sent money or shared a password?

Contact your bank using the number on the back of your card, or the official number on your statement — not any number from the suspicious message.
