Privacy Policy

This policy explains what information Best Chapter (bestchapter.co) collects, how we use it, and the choices you have. We keep it as simple as we can. Short version: we collect what we need to run the site, we never sell your personal information, and you can delete your account and data at any time.

What we collect

Without an account

• Scam recovery plan. The answers you give to build your plan are saved anonymously for research into how scams affect people. They are never linked to your name, email, or account.
• Brain games and bucket list. When you're not signed in, scores and bucket list items are kept in your own browser's storage on your device.
• Sharing your story. If you choose to share an experience with a scam, your name and email are optional. If you give an email, we take that to mean you want to hear from us about it.
• Scam checker use count. To limit how often the scam checker can be used each month without a membership, we count uses by IP address. We never store the address itself: we keep only a scrambled, one-way version of it (a salted hash) together with the month and a number. It can't be turned back into your IP address, and it is deleted automatically after about two months. The messages you submit are not stored with it.

With an account

• Account details: your email address and a password (stored in scrambled, hashed form by our sign-in provider, never in readable form).
• What you save: messages you ask the scam checker to review and its results, your trusted contacts, brain game scores, and bucket list items.
• Scam checker use count: if you have an account without a membership, we count your scam checks for the month against your account (a number only, not the messages) to apply the monthly limit.
• Membership status: which plan you have, whether you're in your trial, and your billing dates.

When you pay

Payments are handled by PayPal. You enter your payment details with PayPal, not with us, so we never see or store your card number. We receive confirmation of your payment or subscription, the plan or item you bought, and the amounts and dates, and PayPal's identifiers for your payment so we can manage cancellations and refunds. PayPal's own use of your information is covered by PayPal's privacy statement.

Automatically

Like most sites, our hosting providers receive basic technical information when you visit (such as your IP address, browser type, and pages requested). We use it to deliver the site, keep it secure, and fix problems.

How we use it

• to provide the site, your account, and the tools you use;
• to take payments, manage memberships, and send receipts and billing notices;
• to respond to you and send service emails (such as account confirmation);
• to protect the site and prevent fraud and abuse;
• to understand, in aggregate and without identifying you, how the site is used so we can improve it.

AI features

The scam checker, lifestyle quiz, bucket list brainstorm, and similar tools send what you submit to an AI provider (Anthropic) so it can generate a result. We send only what's needed for that request. Please don't enter account numbers, Social Security numbers, or other highly sensitive details into these tools. We don't sell your submissions, and we don't use them for advertising.

Who we share it with

We share information only with the service providers who help us run the site, and only for that purpose:

• PayPal, to process payments and subscriptions;
• Supabase, which provides our database and sign-in;
• our website hosting provider;
• Resend, which sends our emails;
• Anthropic, for the AI features described above.

We may also disclose information if the law requires it, to protect people's safety or our rights, or in a sale or reorganization of the business (in which case we'll tell you and the new owner must honor this policy). We do not sell your personal information, and we don't share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.

Cookies and similar storage

We use only what the site needs to work: a sign-in session cookie so you stay signed in, a short-lived cookie that remembers where to send you after you sign in, and your browser's local storage for things like dismissed prompts and game or bucket-list data. We don't currently use advertising or third-party tracking cookies. If that changes, we'll update this policy and ask where the law requires. PayPal sets its own cookies on its payment buttons and pages.

Affiliate links

Some pages may include links that pay us a commission if you buy from a partner. Following one sends the partner your visit information the way any link does, but we don't give partners your account details.

How long we keep it

We keep your account information and saved items until you delete them or your account. Billing records are kept as long as needed for tax, accounting, and legal reasons. Anonymous recovery-plan answers can't be tied to you, so they can't be individually deleted.

Your choices and rights

• Delete your account: use the delete option on your account page. This removes your profile and saved items and cancels any active subscription.
• Access, correct, or export your information, or ask a question about it, by emailing us.
• Unsubscribe from non-essential emails using the link in them. We'll still send essential account and billing messages.
• If you live in a place with privacy laws (such as California), you may have additional rights to know, delete, and correct your personal information and to not be discriminated against for using them. Email us and we'll respond within the time the law allows.

Security

We use reputable providers, encrypted connections, and access controls so people can only see their own data. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a strong, unique password.

Children

Best Chapter is for adults. We don't knowingly collect information from children under 13, and if we learn we have, we will delete it.

Changes

If we change this policy in a significant way, we'll post the new version here and update the effective date above, and email account holders if the change affects how we use their information.
