Debt Collection Scams
A caller claims you owe a debt — sometimes an old or unfamiliar one — and threatens legal action, wage garnishment, or arrest if you don't pay immediately, often demanding an unusual payment method.
Warning signs
What to watch for
- Threats of immediate arrest or lawsuit if you don't pay right away
- Refuses to send anything in writing or provide a callback number you can verify
- Demands payment by gift card, wire transfer, or prepaid debit card
- Pressure to keep the call confidential
Stay safe
How to verify
- Legitimate debt collectors are required to send written validation of the debt — ask for this before paying anything
- Request the collector's name, company, and a callback number, then verify independently before engaging further
